- Full uniform is worn on the 1st
Thursday of every month unless otherwise informed, as well
some other occasions during the year. At all other
Thursday meetings uniform should be worn from the waist
up. For half-uniform meetings we recommend the wearing of
a T-shirt under the uniform jumper so that it may be taken
off, and that girls do not wear skirts due to the activities
they will be taking part in.
-
- The uniform required is listed
below and also included is a diagram of the
position of the badges which each Scout will gain over the
time they spend in the Troop.
- Sea Scout Jumper
- Sea Scout Hat and Tally Band
- Black or Grey Trousers
- Black or Dark Grey Socks
- Black Shoes (please note that black
trainers are not an acceptable alternative)
-
- Each Scout will also wear the 8th
Worthing scarlet neckerchief. For Scouts joining who
have not previously been a member of the 8th
Worthing this will be supplied by us
- .
- If you have any problem obtaining
any of the uniform we normally have a variety of second
hand items available.
-
- Although the majority of the activities
run during the year are voluntary, there are two official
activities that are compulsory. Both require attendance
in full, smart uniform although specific details are given
at the time I would like to explain their relevance.
-
- Royal Navy Inspection
- The RN run a scheme by which they
recognise 101 out 400-500 Sea Scout groups in the UK. The
members of this scheme benefit from many opportunities
including trips to naval establishments (we previously have
had a tour of HMS Newcastle and spent a weekend at HMS Bristol).
We also have the option to apply for grants from the
fund that RN organise especially for RN recognised groups!
-
- Approximately every 18 months we
undergo our RN Inspection at which a Royal Navy officer
will assess our uniform and drill, our competence in seamanship
skills and speak to all the Scouts about the activities
they take part in and what they enjoy amongst other things,
to ascertain whether the Group's standards are high enough
to retian the recognition.
-
- Membership of the scheme is prestigious
and very important to the Group.
-
- St George's Day Parade
- As a Scout Group that is not affiliated
to a church this is the only occasion during the year that
we attend a church parade, although in recent years this
has not included the procession through the centre of town.
It is also one of the few occasion in the year where
the whole of the 8th Worthing, from Beavers through to Explorer
Scouts, get together and when every scout renews their promise.
-
- Attendance at both events is very
important and therefore we would appreciate your assistance
to ensure your son/daughter attends both occasions if at
all possible.
-
- From September 2002
we will be running two competitions for which prizes are
up for grabs.
-
- Patrol Competition
- Each patrol will gain points each
week based on attendance and uniform (full uniform where
indicated on program). Points are also awarded for
the winning patrol of events during the troop meetings and
for badges earned by the patrol members. The patrol
with the most points at the end of each term will win a
prize for the best overall patrol.
-
- Badge Competition
- This prize is won
by the Scout who earns the most badges in the year (Sept
- June).
-
- Every 4-6 weeks we
will be challenging the Scouts to complete a specific proficiency
badge. In addition they should also receive details
of the badges relevant to their own hobbies to complete
as they please. For those who are really keen, details
of all badges can be seen at www.scoutbase.org.uk
-
- This competition
is intended to encourage scouts to pursue their interests
beyond areas in our current program.
